How Hunger and Resonance Actually Work in Vampiro Life
Hey folks,
Hunger is not just a status number in Vampiro Life. It is the pressure system that changes tone, risk, and decision quality across your entire Chronicle.
Here is how it actually works right now.
Hunger is both mechanical and narrative
Mechanically, Hunger can influence dice risk and failure patterns. Narratively, it changes how the storyteller frames your scene:
- Hunger 0-1: controlled, patient, almost human
- Hunger 2-3: predatory edge, sharper sensory focus
- Hunger 4: urgency rises, temptation is harder to ignore
- Hunger 5: the Beast is close to the surface, compulsion/frenzy risk is high
So the same social scene can feel very different depending on your Hunger state.
Feeding outcomes are source-based
When you feed, the simulation resolves outcomes from source type. Different sources produce different slake amounts and time costs.
Examples:
- blood bag: low slake, fast
- human safe feed: moderate slake, moderate time
- dangerous or full drain: higher slake, heavier consequences
The system also tracks victim impact (alive, injured, or dead) as part of the feed result.
Resonance appears on human feeding
Human feeding can generate a Resonance result, currently sampled from:
- Choleric
- Melancholic
- Phlegmatic
- Sanguine
At higher Blood Potency, dyscrasia risk can also appear. In short: feeding is not only about reducing Hunger, it can shape downstream flavor and consequences.
Rouse checks can increase Hunger
For discipline activations that require Rouse checks:
- each failed Rouse check adds Hunger
- success adds no Hunger
- Hunger remains capped at 5
This is one of the main reasons players feel sudden pressure spikes even without a dedicated feeding scene.
Compulsions are the Beast's pressure valve
Under high stress or high Hunger, compulsions can trigger and push behavior:
- hunger
- dominance
- harm
- paranoia
- clan-driven compulsion
The point is not just a penalty. The storyteller is instructed to dramatize the compulsion so your character's internal conflict becomes visible in play.
Strategic takeaway
Good Hunger management is tempo management:
- feed too late and scenes become volatile
- feed too aggressively and social/morality fallout grows
- feed intelligently and you keep agency while preserving your mask
